Nothing is worse than politicians expecting their citizens to pick up the slack from their oversight. Many counties in Virginia are facing major budget cuts this year. The state is to blame for many of these shortcomings based on their inability or unwillingness to act on certain issues. The state hasn't really done much to help with fuel cost increases. In fact, the economy as a whole has taken a major step backwards. Funding is low, jobs are scarce, and the government isn't doing much to help. So how exactly did Mr. Romanello pull this proverbial rabbit out of his hat? He did it the old-fashioned way, he cut back on some things. When times get tough, you don't go out and spend more money to make up for it. You tighten up the purse strings a bit and buckle down. You work harder and make up for the difference. This is exactly the kind of solid thinking that allowed Mr. Romanello to come up with this plan. He recommended cutbacks in several key areas like training courses and special events. He also plans to leave many positions in the government unfilled for the foreseeable future. They're even going to close the county pool down on Sundays to make it more cost-effective. While it may mean a little more work for those involved, he felt that it was worth it to help the Home Buyers and Home Sellers in Stafford County save some money. Any time you can help out the general public, it is very reputable to do so. Overall, the decisions made by the board appear to be the right ones.
