Northern Virginia is one of the most affluent places in the United States of America with its booming economy; this enables the median household income to be $100,000. This is underlined by the fact that brands such as Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co. and Ferrari have recently opened large regional stores there. The most notable features of the region are The Pentagon, CIA and numerous IT companies that service the government as well as The Northern Virginia Beltway.

The Northern Virginia Beltway, also known as the "Capital Beltway’"is an area of land split up in to an "inside" and an "outside" region. Originally, the phrase was used politically in describing that most of the power in DC was located inside the beltway, where the Federal Government is located.

Some examples of areas inside the Northern Virginia Beltway are Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church and McLean. Inside the beltway the houses tend to be smaller and older on tree lined lots but lately there has been an explosion of condos being built. The public transport within the beltway is excellent with the metro and bus all very easily accessible. One of the major selling points for people moving there is that they are able to get rid of their cars and just do the daily commute instead, saving themselves lots of money in the process.

The areas outside the beltway have expanded massively in the last decade and some even say that it now extends all the way to Shenandoah Valley where you can find lots of car and van pooling in order to commute to DC. Outside the beltway there are no space issues, the expanse of land is a lot bigger which leads to more diverse homes being built. There have been many new developments around the western part of Fairfax County, Prince William County and Loudoun County.

There is a big difference between living within The Northern Virginia Beltway and living outside of it. They both have an excellent standard of living, amongst the highest in the nation but will suit a different type of person. New families may prefer to live in the suburban Arlington area with their older homes and tree lined roads, younger professionals may choose to live in the newly built condos.

Outside the beltway would probably tend to suit older families who have a bit more money and a car, rather than always relying on public transport, this isn't to say that people living inside the beltway don't own a car, it is however just more popular to use the public transport.
