When it comes to history, you will find that few go back further than this county. Originally, it was Accomac Shire, and it was established in 1634 as one of the first eight shires of Virginia. Its interesting names comes from the Native American tribes in the area's word, Accawmack, which means on the other side. In 1642, the name was changed to Northampton by the British in an attempt to remove Non-English names from the colonies of the New World.

A little more than twenty years later, this area was split into two different counties, with the southern section still being called Northampton and the northern going back to Accomac. With that in mind, it is interesting to notice that the area was not under Confederate control but was held by the North during the Civil War. The “K” at the end of the name was added in in 1940.

As you may have guessed from the description above, there are many different historic aspects of this town that are immediately noticeable. For instance, you will find that you can look at Corbin Hall, E of Horntown, and at Bowman's Folly. You will also find that this county has Kerr Place, which is an excellent example of a Federal style mansion that was built at the end of the eighteenth century.

You will find that this place is also the headquarters of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society, and that it features furnishings and artifacts that date back to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Take some time to really enjoy and absorb the history of the area.
